The Second Occasional LoneStarCon Science Fiction Convention and Chili Cook-off, Variously known as the 55th World Science Fiction Convention and LoneStarCon 2, To be held from August 28th through September 1st, in the year 1997, in San Antonio, Texas.

Progress Report #1--Words From the Chair
by Karen Meschke

A Worldcon in Texas was first envisioned in the 1950's by Walter M. Miller and Chad Oliver, at the Worldcon business meeting held in New Orleans in 1951. In 1994, San Antonio won the first Texas Worldcon, to be held in 1997.
Thanks to everyone who helped make this possible. Because of your support, help, time and energy we now have the opportunity to introduce the World to Texas fandom and to highlight the south-of-the-border influences both in Texas and the World. We are definitely planning to hold a chili cook-off in the artists' village of La Villita, right across the street from the convention center, on Friday evening of the convention.
Our initial goals of throwing good room parties, avoiding evil and doing good will be continued throughout our actual planning of the convention. We need your help and ideas. What you want to see at Worldcon is important to us. We need you to help us make this happen.
If you have an electronic address, please send it to us. We are working towards developing an e-mail distribution list for updates and announcements.
Our office is currently open on Wednesday evenings at 4200 Marathon, in Austin. Call us at (512) 453-7446, or just come by to chat.
LoneStarCon2 is being sponsored by ALAMO (Austin Literary Arts Maintenance Organization), a 13-member organization formed from the 11 members of the former San Antonio bid committee: Richard Brandt, Fred Duarte, Jr., E. A. Graham, Jr., Lisa Greene, Casey Hamilton, Debbie Hodgkinson, Bill Parker, Karen Meschke, Willie Siros, Robert Taylor, and Judith Ward, along with Nina Siros and Dennis Virzi.
With the help of some of our volunteers, we are in the process of putting together our 501(c)3 paperwork, which will be filed with the Internal Revenue Service this spring. We had a lot of help from a lot of very talented people during the bid, and many other people have volunteered since the vote. But there are still some gaps in our organizational chart, and your help is very much needed.
